Why is Bad News So Popular?

Transurfing and the pendulum vortex

One has to wonder, why is bad news so much more popular than good news?

We discuss this in today's episode Stop the Mind Screw Podcast. You can listen here:

It's Transurfing on Tuesday and today we discuss the popularity of negative news. Vadim calls it The Pendulum Vortex.

Hurricane Harvey flooded the Houston area like never before. I had lived here all my life, seen floods many times. But in 2017 it happened.

The news was on 24 hours a day for several days. I got caught up in the devastation. Why was that?

It got to a point where I witnessed a little boy and his family being rescued by boat (one of the hundreds of stories I saw) that I had to say enough was enough. Turn it off! I got caught up in the vortex of the pendulum. Let's discuss what that is!

Have you noticed: the intensity and force of emotions like fear and rage by far outweigh those of joy and happiness.

It has to do with our "caveman" ancestors. Fear and rage were crucial to survival.

"Joy" is technically not useful when it comes to defending yourself, avoiding danger, and foraging for food.

History is full of stories of burden and hardship that have brought more grief and fear than joy and happiness.

This caveman instinct is why we are vulnerable to yield to thoughts of gloom and depression, while feelings of joy and happiness pass relatively quickly.

This is funny from the book when he states, "Have you ever heard of a normal person suffering from too much joy?" 😂 And it's sadly true.

Yet people who suffer from stress and depression can be found in good numbers on the other hand.

But pendulums, especially mass media, actively make use of these features of human perception.

You rarely hear anything good in the news. Take Kindra Hall's story during the pandemic or Joel Osteen's story during the hurricane both spoken about on the episode.

I have a friend who always tells me, "Did you see this happened in the news?" And I respond with, "No I don't watch the news." And she continues to tell me the story with all of its gory details. That is the destructive pendulum trying to pull you to another lifeline.

So how does one combat the destructive pendulum? Well, we learned that you can simply ignore it but so often it is not that easy.

We can also listen to our Guardian Angel or as Vadim says listen to the "rustle of the morning stars."

How in the heck do we do that? We will discuss this next Tuesday!

Next week we will discuss how to hear the "rustle of the morning stars" and have heart and mind coordination.
