What Neville Goddard and a Classic Hymn Can Teach Us About Believing Before Seeing
What do a 19th-century hymn, a powerful Bible verse, and a mystic named Neville Goddard have in common?
Quite a lot, it turns out—especially if you're looking to build unshakable belief in yourself, your purpose, and the unseen forces working in your favor.
Today’s deep dive takes us through timeless spiritual insight and modern manifestation principles that intersect in a beautiful, empowering way. Whether you're navigating uncertainty, dreaming bigger than ever, or ready to turn your inner knowing into outer reality, the teachings of Neville Goddard and the wisdom of 2 Timothy 1:12 might be exactly what you need.
Let’s explore the intersection of scripture, imagination, and self-persuasion—and how to apply these truths to your everyday life.
✨ Who Was Neville Goddard?
Neville Goddard (1905–1972) was a spiritual teacher and author whose message resonates more today than ever before. His central philosophy? Imagination is the only creative power in the universe.
Goddard taught that your inner world—your thoughts, beliefs, assumptions, and mental imagery—shapes your outer world. To him, imagination wasn’t just a tool; it was divine.
“Man is all imagination,” Neville wrote. “God is man and exists in us and we in Him. The eternal body of man is the imagination—that is, God himself.”
His teachings often revolved around living from the end—the idea that we should feel and act as if our desires have already come true. And one of the most profound tools for doing this is self-persuasion.

🧠 What Is Self-Persuasion?
Self-persuasion is the act of convincing yourself of your desired truth—even when your current reality says otherwise.
It is not about faking it or forcing positivity. It’s about aligning your beliefs, emotions, and imagination with the state of being you want to embody.
Neville taught that if you want to change your life, don’t force the outer world to comply. Instead, go inward. Persuade yourself of a new state of being until it becomes your natural mindset. Once your subconscious accepts a belief, the world will reflect it.
“Dare to believe in the reality of your assumption and watch the world play its part relative to its fulfillment.” —Neville Goddard
This isn’t just spiritual woo-woo. Neuroscience backs it up. Repeatedly imagining a new reality creates neural pathways in the brain, essentially training your body and mind to respond as if it were already true.
2 Timothy 1:12
🎵 The Hymn That Echoes Neville’s Message: “I Know Whom I Have Believed”
Surprisingly, this bold concept of belief before evidence shows up in a place you might not expect: an old hymn, written in 1883 by Daniel Whittle.
The hymn “I Know Whom I Have Believed” is based on 2 Timothy 1:12 and reflects the idea of spiritual self-persuasion:
“But I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I’ve committed unto Him against that day.” —2 Timothy 1:12
Let’s break this down.
The author doesn’t say, “I know what I have believed.”
He doesn’t say, “I know how things will work out.”
He says, “I know whom I have believed.”
This is a powerful shift. The focus isn’t on circumstances, outcomes, or understanding all the steps—it’s about trusting the Presence, the Being, the Power behind it all.
And then comes the self-persuasion:
“I am persuaded that He is able to keep what I’ve committed…”
This is the exact energy Neville Goddard invites us into—deep inner knowing that what you’ve imagined, what you’ve committed to, is already being kept. It’s done.

🙏 Scripture and Spiritual Psychology
2 Timothy 1:12 isn’t just a sweet lyric or a line of scripture—it’s a spiritual formula for creation. Paul, the author of this letter, is writing from prison. He’s in the midst of hardship, uncertainty, and what looks like failure. But his faith is unshaken.
He says:
“For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.”
Look at the ingredients of this verse:
Suffering: Life may be tough right now.
Not ashamed: No shame in the struggle.
Know whom: Trust in divine intelligence, not in circumstance.
Persuaded: Inner conviction matters more than outer conditions.
Committed: What you entrust to God—your desires, your dreams—is safe.
Against that day: It's already being prepared, even if you can't see it yet.
In Neville's language, this is living in the end. The seed of your vision has been planted. It’s being watered by your faith and imagination. It’s kept.

🛠 How to Practice Self-Persuasion Daily
Here are three practical ways to start persuading yourself from within—just like Neville, Paul, and countless spiritual teachers have modeled:
1. Identify and Rewrite Limiting Beliefs
Begin by noticing the beliefs that are quietly (or loudly) holding you back. For example:
“I’m not qualified.”
“Money is hard to come by.”
“I always mess things up.”
Once identified, revise them. Neville called this the practice of "revision"—replacing old thoughts with more empowering ones.
Try:
“I’m becoming more capable every day.”
“Abundance flows to me with ease.”
“I am worthy of success and stability.”
2. Feel It Real
This is Neville’s signature method. He taught that when we feel our desired outcome as if it’s already true, we impress it upon the subconscious mind. That’s when change begins.
Visualize yourself already living your new story:
Feel the joy.
Smell the environment.
Hear the affirming conversations.
Know it’s done.
As Neville said:
“Live your life in a sublime spirit of confidence and determination.”
3. Commit It to the Divine
Just like the verse says, commit your dream—your “good deposit”—to the Divine.
Let go of how. Surrender the timeline. Trust that what you’ve imagined is already unfolding in ways your rational mind can’t yet perceive.
Whether you call it God, the Universe, your higher self, or divine imagination—it’s all pointing to the same truth: you are not alone in this process.
Faith vs Force
🎯 Faith vs. Force
One of the most freeing aspects of Neville Goddard’s teachings is that they remove the pressure to hustle and strive. Instead of force, you operate from faith. Instead of proving, you allow.
Self-persuasion isn’t passive. It’s a daily choice to anchor into who you’re becoming—even if no one else sees it yet. It’s the act of being persuaded before the evidence arrives.
And as the hymn beautifully reminds us:
“I know not how this saving faith to me He did impart, Nor how believing in His Word wrought peace within my heart. But I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded…”
You don’t need to know how. You just need to know whom.
Self-persuasion
💡 Final Thoughts
Self-persuasion is more than mindset—it’s a spiritual practice. It’s the bridge between who you’ve been and who you’re becoming. It’s how you align your inner world so clearly that the outer world has no choice but to respond.
So, whether you're navigating a season of change, holding a quiet dream, or questioning what’s next—remember:
You don’t have to figure it all out.
You don’t have to explain your vision to anyone.
You just have to know whom you have believed.
Let your inner conviction be stronger than your current circumstances. Be persuaded. And watch the world rearrange itself around your faith.

Hey friends, it's Kathie Owen, and today we are going on a journey, a deeply personal one that ties together scripture, imagination, faith, and a hymn that has been echoing in my spirit."But I know whom I have believed, and I am persuaded that he is able," that line has been playing in my head every time I reflect on Neville Goddard's concept of self persuasion, and I hear my coaches talk about self persuasion and how Neville talks about it, and this hymn. It has been ringing in my mind every time I hear that and I couldn't figure it out. But today we're gonna talk about this, and this is a reminder that we all need today more than ever. So let's start with Neville because his teachings have been a guiding light through one of my most transformative seasons of my life. Neville Goddard was a mystic, a teacher, and a pioneer in the world of manifestation. His core message, imagination creates reality that your inner world is not just influential, it's. The only creative power and one of my mentors, one of my coaches, Cintia, of manifesting myself, has talked about this so much. She is a avid student of Neville Goddard, and her coaching reflects that highly, and I highly recommend following her on Instagram. I will have a link to that in the show notes and description below. But the concept of self persuasion, Neville showed us how to change our lives by changing our inner assumptions, not through force, not through hustle, but through inner conviction, through believing that what you've imagined is already real. That message hit me hard, especially as I began to unravel the grip that old systems, workplaces, and relationships had on me. I had to find something more heart-centered, something deeper than our titles or appearances, or a time clock. And in the process I started to remember who I was, I mean, who I am. So the verse that inspired the hymn that this entire episode is from two Timothy one 12, and I'm gonna read it for you here right now. For the which cause I also suffer these things. Nevertheless, I am not ashamed for I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day. And this verse is rich with meaning, especially if you read it through Neville's lens. Paul says in this scripture, I know whom I have believed, not what, not how, and not when, but whom, the presence he had come to trust and the phrase, the good deposit. What we commit to that presence is our desire, our dream, our vision. Neville would say that you commit to, your imagination will not return void. It is kept, it is unfolding, and it is all already real. So Neville Goddard's insights on self persuasion are, he taught us that imagination is the only power, not circumstance. I say that all the time. In fact, when I would sign my book, I said, let us remember we are not our circumstances. And also this also makes me feel good because it's not. Logic either, and it's not other people's opinions. Your reality flows from what you've inwardly accepted as true and self persuasion is key. I. You persist in imagining even when the world contradicts it, you let the revision be more real than your fear, and this is what I have been practicing. As many of you know, I walked away from a job where I was silenced. And actually overlooked. I stood up for myself in ways that shook me to my core and I've been navigating change financial unknowns and redefining my identity. And I keep saying, I don't know how this will all unfold, but I know who I have believed. I know the God within me. I know the voice of my intuition, and I know the power of my imagination. So let's talk about how you can practice this in your own life. Starting today. Identify your limiting beliefs. What have you been telling yourself that no longer serves you? Rewrite those stories as empowering affirmations. Speak to yourself like someone you deeply believe in. And then number two, visualize your desired future. Not vaguely, but very vividly. And every single day, feel it real. As Neville says, don't wait for evidence, but be the evidence. And then number three, trust the process. And this is probably the hardest part sometimes. But like Paul and like Neville and like me in this season, be persuaded. Let go of resistance. Let go of urgency. Know that what you've committed to the unseen is already in motion. When you trust in the unseen, when you persuade yourself daily with faith, you begin to live differently. And I can testify to this. My whole world looks different and sometimes it changes just like in minutes. It looks completely different. I can't explain it, but you no longer chase outcomes. When you live like this, you become the version of yourself who already has them. You begin to live from purpose, not pressure from love, not fear, and you begin to recognize that your inner world is always speaking to you, sometimes even through music, dreams or old memories. Like that hymn, or actually even like I discuss in one of my videos here recently about a TV show that I've been watching called Ted Lasso and how the characters in that are speaking to me and telling me things about my vision. It is so. Cool and so synchronistic. But the hymn is called,"I know whom I have Believed," and that line has followed me like a thread back to my roots. I grew up in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and my fraternal grandfather had a PhD in theology and he got his master's in theology from TCU and his PhD from SMU and eventually became the president of the Memphis Theological Seminary back when I was a kid. And the memories I have of him are phenomenal as well as my memories from the church and the things that I learned. But both of my boys actually went to TCU and their father actually loved the presitige because it was a private expensive school. But me, I was always looking for something deeper. It's just in me and it. I didn't want just a title or just a degree. I wanted something heart-centered, and it comes from my soul. It's soul driven and it's real. And I'll tell you something magical. My grandfather still shows up in my dreams. He teaches me things. He reminds me not to be afraid. And he does it with the same gentle humor he always had. And the reason I'm sharing this today is because you may be feeling lost, unsure, or stuck in a place where the future looks foggy. I've been there, and just remember, you don't need all the answers right now. You just need to know whom you've believed the power within you. That power is within you and the spark of the divine. That vision that came to you for a reason. So I had to call my parents the other day just to remember the name of that hymn. I couldn't remember it. And every time I'd hear self persuasion on Neville Goddard from my coaches, or just when I was studying Neville Goddard content, I was like, that reminds me of that hymn. And I wanted to know where it came from, and. I tried asking ai, but I didn't ask Chad GPT because Chad, GPT would've known who it was. But my parents, I called them and they did, and they remembered it with me. And when I read the lyrics and I listened to the song, it was like, God whispered, this is who you've always been. Kathie, you have always believed even when you didn't understand. And now it's time to live from that belief. So my friend, what have you committed to your imagination? What dreams are you ready to trust again? Be persuaded, be bold, and know that it's already being kept. Part of the song says, I know not how the spirit moves. Convincing men of sin revealing Jesus through the word, creating faith in him, but I know whom. I have believed and am persuaded. All right. I invite you to do your own research on that hymn, because it is phenomenal and the story behind it is awesome as well. And it's an old, old hymn. And if you grew up in a church like I did and you, this song brings back memories. Ah, it's so awesome. Right. All right. Thanks for being here today. If this message stirred something in you, please share it and let it be the nudge someone else needs to keep going because we're not just here to survive. We're here to create, to trust and to live in alignment with the vision that's calling us forward. All right. I will talk to you soon, friends, and until next time, I'll see you next time. Peace out and Namaste.
