Addressing Feedback: A Reflection on Influence and Ethics

Today, I'm diving into a rather interesting topic sparked by a comment on my YouTube channel. It's about ethics, influence, and, believe it or not, a bit of self-reflection. So, buckle up!

Here’s the comment we are reflecting upon today, in case you can’t read it in the photo above. We reflect on the good, the bad, and the ugly. 😨😩

“This is really gross. Amy is a fantastic generous coach and her products are excellent. Pathetic attack. You need to take some of your medicine and get ethical. This verges on libel/slander.” -Karen C.


The Eye-Opening Comment ⬆⬆

Recently, a viewer commented on one of my videos, calling it a "gross" and "pathetic attack" on Amy Porterfield, suggesting it verged on libel or slander.

You know what? They were right about it being “gross.” But I don’t think that’s the word I would use.

I think I’d say victim-y. I know that is NOT a word, but it is a better description than “gross.” 🤣

And “pathetic” - yup, she nailed it!

Anyhow, I re-listened to the video and immediately took it down. Why? Because I sounded like a pathetic, complaining victim, which is not who I am most of the time. Hey, I am human!! 🤣

However, I left the original article up because it better represents my true voice and thoughts.


Taking My Own Medicine

The comment made me realize that she was also right in that I needed to practice what I preach – being ethical and less pathetic.

So, down went the video. Yes, I took the video down. It was pathetic.

But this incident also made me ponder deeper about the ethics of influence, especially in the context of Amy's work.

Influence: A Double-Edged Sword

Renowned psychologist Robert Cialdini talks about the ethical use of influence – it should uplift, build relationships, and create win-win situations, not manipulate or deceive. Link to Cialdini’s Book on Amazon

Unfortunately, I've observed Amy using these techniques more for manipulation. Like that photo, she posted in front of a Zoom audience while marketing for her DCA launch in 2023. That felt more like a play for significance than genuine engagement amongst the many other things that I talk about in these articles.


Market Trends and Personal Integrity

I'm not aiming to be a renowned coach like Amy; I prefer staying small and accessible.

And I've noticed that the market is shifting – people are seeking authenticity over flashy marketing. Amy's methods may lose their charm as this change continues. But I seriously doubt it. I mean look at the comment, clearly she still has “charm.”


The Crazy Line Between Feedback and Defamation

Let's talk about libel and slander as this is where I disagree with the comment.

You see, those two words are about making false claims to harm someone's reputation.

I believe Amy's reputation will remain intact despite my criticisms. She's a pro at marketing, making her sound like she's reading our minds, which is why many see her as “fantastic” and “generous.” I used to think the same way back in 2021.

And Amy’s reputation will always precede herself despite my sharing my feedback and stories.


My Personal Revelation

I've come to see that neither Amy nor I am victims in this narrative.

She has her supporters.

And I have my path, guided by intuition and inner power. I also have a true desire to be genuinely helpful to those I serve in my little, beloved corner of the world. 🌍


Wrapping It Up

So, here's the takeaway: feedback, can be incredibly valuable.

It makes us reflect, grow, and perhaps most importantly, stay true to our ethical compass. As I like to say, “Do better, be better.”
