A pendulum is from the book Reality Transurfing by Vadim Zeland. I talk about pendulums all the time. They are simply thought structures that only want your energy. Examples of pendulums are sports teams, political parties, the news, social media, celebrities, corporations, and the list goes on and on.


Not all pendulums are destructive.

It is important to identify where you are placing your energy because we only have so much energy to give. When you give your energy to destructive pendulums you find yourself fatigued, angry, and irritable. Vadim says it best, “The pendulum’s favorite dish is dissatisfaction and lack of fulfillment.” When you feel those two things you know you have been hooked by a destructive pendulum.

Have no fear, there is a solution to this. And that is what today’s quote is all about.


Story

Christmas 2008. I was at the movie theatre with my two young boys. We are going to see the newly released movie Marley and Me starring Jennifer Anniston and Owen Wilson.

The movie is based on the autobiography of John Grogan. Jennifer and Owen are a happy couple. They adopt a dog named Marley. Life is idyllic until the aging Marley suffers a near-fatal intestinal disorder. He recovers, but, too old for corrective surgery, suffers a second attack later. Marley is euthanized with John at his side. The family pays their last respects to their beloved pet as they bury him beneath a tree in their front yard.

The movie is terribly sad. At the worst part, you know, the part where Marley is put to sleep, I began weeping. All of a sudden my son leans over to me and looks at my face. He says, “Mom are you crying?” Next thing you know everyone in the theatre starts laughing.

Guess what just happened, Kody stopped the pendulum sway by introducing humor.


Act dispassionately?

But what does it mean to act dispassionately, rent yourself out and remain the observer? I used to practice this on particularly sad movies, especially ones I watched with my boys as young children. They hated to see me cry. And Kody would often times look at me and say “Are you crying?”

I began to practice what I call ‘emotion control.’ I would watch the movie and remind myself, “this is just a movie. Don’t get caught up in the emotion.” I acted dispassionately and remained the observer.


How do actors do it?

I also learned about this practice while watching shows like Sanford and Son. I often wondered how comedians would not laugh during such funny parts of the show. Red Foxx was the best at this. He would remain so calm during a funny scene that it made the scene even funnier.

Watch this video and observer how Fred Sanford does not laugh at something that is terribly funny. Actors do this all the time. They observe dispassionately and remain the observer. There is power here!


Remain Calm

I worked at the YMCA for over 20 years. We had to practice safety measures all the time. Notice I said practice. This practice would help us be ready for emergency situations. I learned valuable lessons during this training. It is always better to remain calm in panic situations. It could save your life.

Practice observing situations. Do not always jump in and draw conclusions. Pretend to sit in the auditorium and observe instead of reacting with drama. Instead react as you would need to if you kept your composure. This means to act in a place of power and not force. You will know what to do and your energy will be conserved for a true emergency.

Why? Because this is the best way to stop the pendulum’s sway.


Conclusion

Remember the pendulum only wants your energy. When you practice ‘emotion control’ you will not cry at the sad movie, laugh at the most inopportune moment, or get upset when your team blows the big game. I mean, you can, if you want to. That’s for you to decide.
