Personal Growth

Self-confidence is an essential aspect of our personal growth and success. It is the belief in oneself, one's abilities, and one's worth. However, self-confidence does not come naturally to a lot of people, and for many, it is a journey that requires effort, practice, and a growth mindset.

We are going to discuss confidence and how expectations, harsh self-judgment, and preoccupation with fear can hold us back. This is now my 100th episode as the podcast host on Kathie’s Coaching Podcast. I have learned many things on this journey to get to 100 and I wanted to share them with you today.

This has taken what seems like a lot of hard work and turned into so many positive outcomes. This is a journey of personal development it has led to new challenges and the outcome is complete self-confidence. I have met imposter syndrome and some low self-confidence in the process. But take a few deep breaths and let's discuss this great topic of self-confidence and having a growth mindset.

Expectations

To build confidence, it's important to recognize and challenge our expectations, practice self-compassion, and focus on the present moment. I once heard a Chinese Proverb that said, "Happy is the man who expects nothing for he is never disappointed." And I have gone to that extreme at one time. But we need expectations in this journey we call life. Zero expectations lead to a fixed mindset and low self-esteem.

We can develop greater resilience and self-confidence in our abilities by acknowledging and confronting our fears, taking small steps, and seeking support. By letting go of expectations, harsh self-judgment, and preoccupation with fear, we can unlock our full potential and live a more fulfilling and confident life. A more confident person.

One of the significant factors that hinder people's confidence is expectations, both external and internal. These expectations can come from society, peers, family, or even from oneself. They create unnecessary pressure and burden that can make one doubt their abilities, worth and potential. Hence, letting go of expectations can be a powerful way to build self-confidence.

Here are some ways to let go of expectations and boost your self-confidence:

  1. Identify your expectations: The first step is to recognize the expectations that you have of yourself and those that others have of you. It is important to differentiate between realistic and unrealistic expectations. Unrealistic expectations can be toxic and cause feelings of inadequacy, while realistic expectations can motivate and guide you. And that can be a very good thing.

  2. Challenge your expectations: Once you identify your expectations, you need to evaluate them and challenge their validity. Ask yourself an important question like "Is this expectation realistic?" or "Am I setting this expectation to please others?" or "Is this expectation aligned with my values and goals?" Challenging your expectations can help you let go of the ones that are not beneficial or necessary.

  3. Focus on your strengths: Instead of focusing on your weaknesses and limitations, focus on your strengths and abilities. The first thing you want to do is acknowledge and celebrate your accomplishments, no matter how small they may be. This will help you build a positive self-image and improve your confidence and create high self-esteem.

  4. Embrace your imperfections: Nobody is perfect, and striving for perfection can be a stressful and overwhelming expectation. Embrace your imperfections, and recognize that they are a part of what makes you unique and special. Accepting yourself for who you are, flaws and all, can help you feel more confident in your abilities.

  5. Take calculated risks: Stepping out of your comfort zone and taking calculated risks can help you build self-confidence. The more you challenge yourself, the more you learn and grow. Even if you don't succeed, taking risks can help you build resilience and confidence in your ability to handle failure. It's important not to focus on the negative outcomes and instead have a confident mindset and learn from defeat as I spoke about in this article right here.

Letting go of expectations can be a powerful way to build self-confidence. By identifying, challenging, and focusing on your strengths, embracing your imperfections, and taking calculated risks, you can improve your self-esteem and self-worth. It's important to challenge those thoughts and create a life experience that challenges those negative thoughts.

  3. Focus on your strengths: Rather than dwelling on your weaknesses, try to focus on your strengths. Acknowledge the things you're good at, and celebrate your accomplishments. This can help you build a more positive self-image. Become your own best friend and celebrate those small wins which in turn creates a new sense of self.

  4. Practice self-compassion: Self-compassion is the practice of treating yourself with kindness, understanding, and support, just as you would a good friend. When you're struggling with self-judgment, try to be compassionate towards yourself, rather than critical. Develop the personality trait of kindness towards yourself. You will find this to be the right mindset every single time.

  5. Take small steps: Building self-confidence is a journey, and it takes time. Start by taking small steps outside of your comfort zone, and celebrate each success along the way. This can help you build momentum and confidence in your abilities. You will watch your confidence level rise with even the small goals.

  6. Seek support: Sometimes, it can be helpful to seek support from a trusted friend or a professional. Talking to someone about your struggles with self-confidence can provide perspective and help you develop more positive self-talk.
